Key West Lobsterfest
Seafood lovers can chow down on Florida’s clawless lobster during a tasty “feast-ival” Thursday through Sunday, Aug. 6-9. The annual Key West Lobsterfest features a savory schedule of events ranging from a traditional lobster boil to a lively street fair starring the sensational crustacean prepared in a variety of ways.
The flavorful festivities celebrate the bounty of the Florida Keys lobster season that opens Aug. 6. Famous for its sweet and tender meat, the Keys’ spiny lobster often is served steamed with drawn butter, paired with a seasoned stuffing or cold in savory salads.
Festival events are to kick off at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, when lobster aficionados can gather at the Sunset Tiki Bar & Grille, 617 Front St., for a lobster boil that also includes shrimp, andouille sausage, crawfish, corn on the cob and new potatoes. Live entertainment and libation specials are to round out the evening’s attractions. Reservations are strongly suggested.
Friday’s action includes the Lobsterfest Duval Crawl of watering holes on Key West’s popular Duval Street and a lavish vintner’s dinner at Tavern N Town at the Key West Marriott Beachside Hotel, 3841 N. Roosevelt Blvd. The four-course gourmet meal stars Florida lobster paired with enticing vintages, and reservations are required.
The festival’s anticipated highlight is the Key West Lobsterfest Street Fair in the 100 through 500 blocks of Duval. From noon to 11 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, chefs from as many as 20 local restaurants are to prepare lobster specialties ranging from tempting appetizers to traditional dinners for hungry attendees. Offerings feature fresh crustaceans caught by Florida Keys lobster fishermen.
A free outdoor concert is slated for 1-10:30 p.m. with local, regional and national bands performing from a stage at the intersection of Duval and Greene streets. Other attractions include art, crafts and merchandise from dozens of on-site vendors.
Lobsterfest is to end Sunday, Aug. 9, with a sumptuous lobster brunch at Tavern N Town. Reservations are suggested.
The crustacean celebration benefits a scholarship fund for Key West High School students.
