Sunset Festival Performers: Dominique’s Circus Cats
One of the most interesting and original parts of Sunset festival, and probably its longest running act, is Dominique the Catman and his Flying Circus Cats. Growing up in Key West Dominique’s act was my absolute favorite. This act is like nothing else you can imagine; it includes cat acrobatics, cat herding, cat comedy, flaming rings, tightropes, juggling and much more. Dominique is an expert performer himself, telling jokes, keeping all of his performers moving at once, and making sure everyone is very entertained. Parrot Key is only a short bike or cab ride away from Mallory square, where you can catch the Catman almost every day for three performances before, during, and after sunset. Trust me, it’s well worth seeing.
Weather at Parrot Key
Today’s weather is cold and rainy. 59 degrees most of the day, getting a little nippier at night. The good news is, after today the warmth is coming back: all of next week looks like sun.
Fishing Report
Fishing reports have started coming in. All of the Mackerel species have moved in and the fishing is really heating up for them. Look for King Fish, Spanish Mackerel and their big cousin the Wahoo. This is really dynamic and exciting fishery, highly suggested if you have never tried it. Expect to see explosive hits and really fast-paced fights. Good numbers of Tarpon have been seen moving into the flats; their season looks to be shaping up really well. Mutton snapper have been a little slow (at least for the writer last Thursday) but plenty of Yellowtail and sporadic tuna. Really exciting season so far, and it’s just getting better. As always, the front desk can help you make reservations with the best guides for whatever fishery you want to target.
The Bull
The bull is one of Key West’s classic establishments, with nightly entertainment that ranges from classic rock to the humor of Yankee Jack and regular appearances by Elvis. Piggybacked on top of The Bull are two other establishments: the Whistle Bar and The Garden of Eden. Whistle Bar is known for its panoramic views of historic Duval street, while the Garden of Eden is Key West’s only clothing optional bar.
Key West Weather and Sunset for this Weekend
Key West is cooling a little this weekend to 70 degrees (warmest in America!). There will be some clouds and a little rain, but in general it should be very nice, with a full week of sun starting Monday. Sunset is going to be at about 6:20. The festivities at Mallory Square will be starting at around 4:00, or if you prefer a more intimate setting, Parrot Key’s Sunset Pier is now open for guests.
Nightlife Update: Schooner Wharf
The ever popular waterfront bar Schooner Wharf will, as always, be hosting live music every day this month. Just a short cab ride from Parrot Key, music starts here every day at Noon and goes until at least 1 AM. Performers this week include: Michael McCloud, Raven & Caffeine Trio, The Magic of Frank Everhart, Gary Hempsey and Will Hoppey, Christopher Dean and the Johnny Rawls Band. Scooner Wharf’s full schedule can be seen here and you can always check in on them via their webcam.
