“Raising Arizona” Tonight at the Tropic!

It’s a Monday night in Key West, which means you could head down to Duval St. and get lost in the crowds, stop by Mallory Square for Sunset Festival…or you could swing by the Tropic Cinema for one of their classic movies! Tonight we’ll be doing the latter.

Why not grab some popcorn and catch a Coen Brothers comedy at the Tropic tonight? “Raising Arizona,” the 1987 cult classic that has since been rated one of The American Film Institute’s funniest movies, stars Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter as a couple who would do just anything to have a child. With John Goodman and Frances McDormand rounding out an all-star cast, this film is one for the ages.

“Raising Arizona” at the Tropic Cinema, located at 416 Eaton St., tonight at 7:00.

Rainy Day Got You Down?

There’s still plenty to see & do in Key West, even when it’s a little wetter outside than usual.

The shops & museums by Mallory Square offer a wide variety of oddities and handicrafts, from massive beach ball-sized sea sponges to doubloons salvaged from nearby shipwrecks. Take a spin through Mel Fisher’s Treasure Museum, or bring the kids to the always entertaining Key West Toy Factory, with its whimsical ambiance and high-quality, unique toys. The Shipwreck Museum, Hemingway House and the Harry S. Truman Little White House all offer a bevy of indoor entertainment that is fun for both adults and children. And of course, Ripley’s Believe it or Not Museum is worth a spin– if you can handle it!

Or, if you’re not afraid of a little mud, why not grab a plastic poncho and umbrella and go spend a lazy afternoon making your way through the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden? This lush sanctuary is the only “frost-free” botanical garden in the continental United States, and offers protection to many endangered flora & fauna. It also houses Key West’s only “Chug Museum,” an open-air collection of salvaged boats used by Cuban refugees seeking asylum. These incredible vessels are constructed from a myriad of materials, from reclaimed refrigerator motors to styrofoam slabs, and are truly amazing to see.

For directions to any of the above locations, ask your friendly front-desk concierge. They’ll be more than happy to point you in the right direction (even if that direction is just to the nearest indoor movie theatre!)

This Week’s Weather Forecast

Pull out the sunblock and pack your beach bag — it’s going to be a hot one! This week is going to be perfect for catching some rays at Fort Zachary Taylor or catching up on your reading by one of the pools at Parrot Key. Highs in the 80′s with nighttime lows not far behind, this is prime flip-flop & tank-top weather. Why not take the kids down to Flamingo Crossing for a homemade ice cream (a local’s favorite) or zip on over to the White Street Fishing Pier and enjoy the breezes coming off the water? If the sun gets to be too much, head into the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory to take a rest and enjoy an oasis off Duval’s hustle and bustle. Don’t forget to stay hydrated and load up on that SPF…nothing throws a wrench into vacation plans like a scorching sunburn! And remember: Sunset Celebration, Key West’s nightly arts & music celebration, is happening every night over at Mallory Square.

Have a wonderful week!

Today’s Weather at Parrot Key

It’s 88 degrees and sunny today at Parrot Key, with a light wind from the South East.  There is rain coming later this week, but that should be a reprieve for any visiting from the northeast or midwest.  The sun sets tonight at 8:15, and with the weather coming should be particularly stunning.  The sunset festival performers should be starting at around 5:30 tonight in historic mallory square, with performances continuing until at least 9:00pm.
