Starting tomorrow is the first day of the annual Robert James celebrity S.L.A.M. tournament off of Key West.  Participants compete to catch one or more of each of the three major flats species: tarpon, bonefish and permit, with the most catches for points winning the tournament.   Past celebrity participants include Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays; NASA space shuttle astronaut Bruce Melnick and former Denver Broncos football player Mark Cooper.  Should be tons of fun, for more information check out the Redbone website here.

Todays Weather at Parrot Key

It’s 73°F with partial clouds today at Parrot Key.  15 mph winds from the Southeast will kick up a little bit of chop on the ocean, but there is an upside to this: tuna have been spotted coming in close to the reefs and prefer medium wind and cloud cover. This is a rare opportunity for some great fishing.

Sunset tonight will be at 6:27 pm, festivities at Mallory Square will start around 4:30.

Fishing Report: Tarpon have Arrived

Tarpon season has officially begun in Key West. Warm weather has raised water temperatures and baitfish are in abundance. The tarpon are feeding heavily in the backcountry and flats. Tarpon are one of the strongest sports fish in the Keys, prized for their powerful hits and arm wrenching fights full of jumps and runs. They can be hooked on the fly or traditional gear all over the flats and backcountry. Either way, this will be the fight of your life. Parrot Key staff will be happy to help you reserve a trip with the very best guides in the Keys.

Todays Weather at Parrot Key Hotel and Resort

It’s a beautiful day at Parrot Key today, 70°F and sunny with some small clouds.  This is perfect weather for tanning, walking around the city, or ocean sports.  If you do go fishing these are conditions that are great for all three mackerel species, or for trying to pick up some tuna.  Reef fishing will be a little harder because the wind is blowing at a steady 14 mph, so chop might make some it difficult for those who get seasick.

Tonight sunset is at 6:21 PM, the sunset performances will start around 4:30.

Fishing Report

Fishing reports have started coming in.  All of the Mackerel species have moved in and the fishing is really heating up for them. Look for King Fish, Spanish Mackerel and their big cousin the Wahoo. This is really dynamic and exciting fishery, highly suggested if you have never tried it. Expect to see explosive hits and really fast-paced fights.  Good numbers of Tarpon have been seen moving into the flats; their season looks to be shaping up really well. Mutton snapper have been a little slow (at least for the writer last Thursday) but plenty of Yellowtail and sporadic tuna.  Really exciting season so far, and it’s just getting better.  As always, the front desk can help you make reservations with the best guides for whatever fishery you want to target.
