Local Art Night!

Key West’s favorite vegetarian & vegan-friendly restaurant, The Café, will host Local Art Night tonight from 6:00 – 10:00pm. Enjoy live music as you peruse work from local art stars such as Key West Honest Works Pottery, Marlene Konig, Clara Dara, Ginger Green and more. Art Openings in Key West Tonight

Two fabulous shows open today in Key West, and you’re not going to want to miss either one of them! First, go see the new “Jack Baron – Celebrating the Colors of Key West” exhibit, which opens this morning and will run through October at The Custom House Museum, 281 Front St. Call 305-295-6616 for more information.

Then this evening at 5:00 pm, mosey on down to the Key West Art Center, a non-profit community art gallery located at 301 Front Street for “Cabrera & Varela — Historic Art & Poetry.” Enjoy the combined works of painter, Linda Cabrera, and poet, J.M. Varela. An opening reception from will go from 5 – 8 p.m.,  with Comparsa dancing at 7 p.m and readings by poet J.M. First Fridays Art Walk Tonight…

Culture hounds will be delighted to learn that tonight is Key West’s favorite art event— First Fridays— the evening in which galleries and studios open to the public for a night of fun, free wine and mingling amidst the island’s newest art treasures. A few highlights that you should be sure not to miss…

-Island Arts Co-op Gallery will host a reception for new work in painting and jewelry by Katharine Doughty, their newest member. Located at 1128 Duval Street.

-The Key West Art Center presents an exhibit of acrylics painted by Mally Weaver done to illustrate the new children’s book — “Lucky Nickel” — a true adventure story about a sea turtle rescued in southwestern Florida.  Visitors young and old are invited to view the original paintings and the book in person. Located at 301 Front Street.

- Kate Peachey is opening her private studio to visitors tonight, July 6, from 5 to 9pm.
Kate’s Studio is located in the old carriage house at the rear of 1309 Whitehead St. Both Kate’s paintings in oil or acrylic, as well as holistic jewelry designer Karen Moore’s ZEN jewelry collection, will be on view.

Support Local Theatre at the Key West FRINGE Happy Hour!

This Friday from 5-8 pm, come support local theatre company Key West FRINGE at their special Shakespeare-themed “Bard and Brew Happy Hour” at the BottleCap Groove Lounge. Gather with fellow fans of the Bard and listen as members of this traveling troupe of actors regales you with tales from their travels and selected works from Othello, Twelfth Night and Taming of the Shrew.  Curtain time is 6pm.

The BottleCap Lounge is located at 1128 Simonton Street, Key West.

Spend your Thursday with “The Boss”

Looking for something a little different to do with your Thursday in beautiful Key West?

Today marks the opening of The Pop Culture Vault Gallery’s newest show, the world premiere of: “The Art of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.” Featuring photographs by David Denenberg, who documented Bruce & The E Street Band for over 40 years, (and who will be on hand to speak about his work in person on June 28th, 29th and 30th!) this fascinating exhibition is not to be missed. Springsteen fans will certainly love the material, and Denenberg is sure to delight and inspire.

Located at 622 Duval St., The Pop Culture Vault Gallery is offering free admission to the show’s opening today– interested parties need simply to call and RSVP.

Walk on White

Tonight from 6:00pm to 9:00pm, join art lovers from across the island as they converge on White Street for Key West’s favorite open studios event. All participating galleries along White St., from Southard to Truman, will welcome guests– with some offering free wine and snacks to keep spirits high. Mingle with locals and visitors alike as you view new works on display at favorites such as Harrison Gallery (825 White St.), Stone Soup Gallery & Frame Shop (802 White St.), The Studios of Key West (600 White St.) and more.

Fantasy Fest King & Queen Candidate Meeting: Today, 6pm

One of the most important accolades any Key West fan can win, the King & Queen of Fantasy Fest are certainly a vital part of the October celebrations. As with any awarded monarchy, campaigning for one’s crown is of the utmost importance! If you think you’ve got what it takes to wear this year’s crown, come to an informative meeting this evening, June 11th at 6pm at the Southernmost Hotel Conference Room, 1319 Duval St. Official campaigning begins Friday, August 24th, so today’s meeting is a great way to get a jump on preparations and have any questions about the process answered. As with each year, candidates whose fundraising efforts are the most successful will be crowned the King and Queen of Fantasy Fest on Friday, Oct. 19, at the official Coronation Ball, the theme of which is “Mayan Empire.”

Art Camp for Kids begins today

Presented by The Key West Art & Historical Society, this year’s summer Art Camp for children ages 5 to 12 begins today, June 11. The two one-week sessions will take place at at East Martello, 3501 S. Roosevelt Blvd., and will teach students about the culture of global and local art. Classes are held daily from 9:30am to 12:30pm and are a wonderful way for children to escape the summer heat for a few blissful hours of crafts and learning! The cost of each two-week session is $150 for non-museum members and $135 for museum members.

Pride Fest Continues with a new day of activities…

Day 3 of Pride Fest is here, and the schedule looks great! From film screenings to dance parties, your Friday night looks anything but dull. Mile Zero has the full schedule, with something for everyone. Our suggestion for a must-see? Aqua’s Fruits of the Rainbow Dance Party, a wild and wonderful rainbow-themed dress up dance party. Definitely the best way to celebrate Pride Week while competing for a cash prize for the most inventive color ensemble! And with no cover at the door, it’s definitely the most affordable party happening in Key West tonight.

Key West Botanical Garden’s ART GARDEN

Now through July 2012, take a stroll through the Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden and see how many fabulous works of art you can find! An outdoor exhibition that blends nature with sculpture, this annual event is an incredible way to spend the day with friends and family. Nestled within the lush grounds are more than 17 pieces of art, many of which incorporate recycled or found materials. Finding all 17 is a great challenge, and makes a fun scavenger hunt for kids!

Established in 1935, The Key West Tropical Forest & Botanical Garden is a 15 acre habitat which houses over 450 native plants, with birds and butterflies as well. Located at mm 4.5 off College Road, it offers 8 self-guided tours that include 2 butterfly gardens, 2 wet-land habitats, a Cuban Chug exhibit, a hardwood hammock and more. Artists displayed throughout the grounds include Lois Giffen, Jackie Sanchez, Jim Racchi, Robert D’Antonio, Richard Cook, Jiwan Noah Singh and Katie Turax Alexander, among many others!
