Make Earth Day Everyday With Unique Florida Keys Conservation Activities

April 22 marks the worldwide commemoration of Earth Day but throughout the year, visitors to the Florida Keys, can do their part to protect the Earth. Many don’t realize that the Florida Keys are surrounded by a national marine sanctuary and paralleled by the United States’ only living coral barrier reef, with other significant conservation efforts in place. We’ve highlighted the many ways that you can do your part during a visit to the Florida Keys and Parrot Key Resort!

Got Your Bags? Florida Keys Pledge

Keys visitors can “take a pledge” in the Got Your Bags? Florida Keys campaign, which encourages the voluntary reduction of single-use plastic bags and the adoption of reusable bags to decrease marine debris and litter in the Keys. The grass-roots initiative was launched in cooperation with the Keys’ Green Living & Energy Education organization, a local nonprofit dedicated to education and promoting sustainable living in the Keys.

Residents and visitors who sign a pledge at First State Bank at MM 30.5 in Big Pine Key — the program’s first designated pledge station — are to receive a complimentary reusable shopping bag donated by the bank and Save-A-Turtle. The latter’s mission is to preserve and protect rare and endangered marine turtles. Big Pine Key is 40 minutes north of Parrot Key Resort. For more information, visit www.keysglee.com/gyb.

Florida Keys Voluntourism Opportunities

Visitors who want to do something good for the environment beyond Earth Day and add an enriching element to their next Florida Keys vacation, can connect and get involved with voluntourism opportunities through a new website at www.keysvoluntourism.com. The site provides direct links to a variety of Florida Keys charities, nonprofit organizations and foundations — all dedicated to protecting and improving the quality of human and animal life in the island chain — that are seeking volunteers.

Keys travelers can give back to the destination and its unique ecosystems with such activities as helping build an underwater coral nursery or planting corals on actual reefs, collecting reef fish populations data, assisting with yard work or minor repairs at an outdoor tropical garden facility, feeding injured wild birds or mending their cages, cleaning or maintaining nature paths or trails, or even helping with fundraising events.

Some of the best endurance runners in the country and from overseas are to navigate up to 40 bridges flanked by the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and Gulf of Mexico during the sixth annual KEYS100 Ultramarathon Races set for Saturday, May 18, through the Florida Keys. Guests looking for accommodation in Key West can call (855) 327-7200 or visit www.parrotkeyresort.com.

About the Keys100 Ultramarathon

The KEYS100 includes three competitions that follow the island chain’s renowned Overseas Highway: a 100-mile individual race from Key Largo to Key West, a 50-mile individual race from Marathon to Key West and a 100-mile, six-runner team relay race from Key Largo to Key West. Top honors are awarded in each race. Before the 2013 event, a pre-race pasta dinner is scheduled for 5-9 p.m. Friday, May 17, at Bogie’s Café at the Key Largo Holiday Inn, mile marker (MM) 100. Tickets are $10 for an all-you-can-eat buffet. Saturday morning, the 100-mile team relay and individual races are to begin at 6 a.m. and 6:10 a.m., respectively, on the sidewalk near MM 100 oceanside at Key Largo’s Divers Direct and Office Depot shopping center.

The 50-mile ultra is to begin at 10 a.m. in front of the Marathon Garden Club at MM 50. Nearly 80 percent of the race is to be run on bike paths, pedestrian bridges and service lanes, with the remainder on road shoulders facing traffic. All individual runners are to be provided aid station support with food, drinks and related items at 10-mile intervals, and at mile markers 75 and 25. All races are to end at the same finish line at Key West’s Higgs Beach. No roads or lanes are to be closed and, as in past years, no traffic disruption is expected, according to event organizers. An awards program is set for noon Sunday beneath a large tented area at the finish line.

Marathon Registration

Registration is $250 for the 100-mile individual race, $210 for the 50-mile individual race and $720 per relay team. Active military and first responders receive a 20 percent discount. All participants must be registered by May 12. The competitions benefit the Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys. More than 1,100 athletes plus support crew, volunteers, family and friends are expected to participate in the race through the Keys.

Delectable Dishes to Star at April 29 Taste of Key West

It’s not unusual for culinary connoisseurs who visit Key West to search out chefs and restaurants specializing in seafood, tropical and Caribbean flavors, European delicacies, vegetarian treats and more. Only on Monday, April 29, however, can they find virtually all of them in the same place — showcasing their signature dishes at the 18th annual Taste of Key West.

IMG_2912

Scheduled for 6-9 p.m., the annual edible extravaganza takes place at the Truman Waterfront Pier overlooking Key West Harbor at the end of Southard Street past Truman Annex. Guests can book rooms at Parrot Key Resort during the event by calling (855) 327-7200.

The waterfront area is to be transformed into a colorful open-air food and beverage market featuring cuisine from more than 50 local restaurants and caterers. Offerings are to range from gourmet savories to fresh-off-the-boat local seafood and mouthwatering desserts.

To complement their “tastes,” attendees can choose among vintages from 100 wineries and vineyards from around the world, provided by Republic National Distributing Company.

EVENT TICKETS

Admission to Taste of Key West is free. Attendees purchase food and wine tickets for $1 per ticket, and commemorative wine glasses for $6, then “spend” their tickets on beverages and delicacies. Each sample costs between three and eight tickets.

All proceeds benefit Key West’s AIDS Help.

Free parking is to be available at the Truman Waterfront. Free shuttle service between selected Key West locations and the waterfront is to be provided every 30 minutes by Old Town Trolley. Plans call for the last trolley to leave the waterfront at 9 p.m.

Although the gates are to open promptly at 6 p.m., attendees can begin arriving at 5 p.m. to purchase their sampling tickets and wine glasses.

Conch Republic to Celebrate 31st Anniversary

With activities ranging from a “drag” race for female impersonators to an exuberant sea “battle” featuring tall ships, the Conch Republic’s 10-day birthday party is set for Friday, April 19, through Sunday, April 28. Guests can book rooms at Parrot Key Resort during the event by calling (855) 327-7200.

MG_2882

EVENT HISTORY

Showcasing the republic’s eccentric spirit, the 31st annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration commemorates the Florida Keys’ secession from the United States following a 1982 U.S. Border Patrol blockade that virtually stopped traffic on the only road from the mainland.

In protest, local officials staged the secession. After announcing the Conch Republic’s birth, they declared “war” on the mother country, pelted federal agents with stale Cuban bread, surrendered after 60 seconds and demanded $1 billion in foreign aid.

Today patriots throughout the Keys fly the royal-blue flag of the republic, whose motto is “We Seceded Where Others Failed,” and celebrate the secession’s anniversary each year with a lively series of events.

ACTIVITIES

As well as the drag race and sea battle for sea dogs and wenches, festival highlights include the World’s Longest Parade, named because its sea-to-sea route down Key West’s Duval Street proceeds from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. The unique parade features the Second Time Arounders, an adult marching band made up of former high school, college and military band members ranging from age 18 to 85.

The festival’s oldest event is the Conch Republic Red Ribbon Bed Race, a charity race of decorated beds on Duval Street. Starring racing teams of strange bedfellows, the quirky challenge is billed as “the most fun you can have in bed with your clothes on.”

The schedule also includes a pirates ball and pig roast, ukulele festival, Conch Crawl showcasing Duval Street watering holes from the gulf to the Atlantic, two-day arts and food marketplace saluting the Keys’ Caribbean island roots, Conch Republic military muster and sailing race commemorating the Keys’ historic shipwreck salvage tradition.

Divers Can Join Search for 1622 Treasure Galleon on Atocha Dive Adventure

Certified divers can work alongside professional treasure salvage experts excavating the wrecksite of a 1622 Spanish galleon during a series of weeklong dive adventures set for mid-June through mid-August.

Participants in the Atocha Dive Adventure join the effort to recover artifacts and treasure from the Spanish galleon Nuestra Señora de Atocha, which sank in approximately 55 feet of water 35 miles southwest of Key West.

In 1985, shipwreck salvor Mel Fisher uncovered an estimated $500 million of the Atocha’s treasure and a large portion of the vessel’s structure — a find widely regarded as one of the modern era’s most significant underwater discoveries.

Crews led by the late Fisher’s family continue to search for the ship’s sterncastle, as well as the gold and silver bars and coins that are listed on the Atocha’s manifest but remain undiscovered.

Each Atocha Dive Adventure includes training in commercial treasure salvage techniques, behind-the-scenes tours of the Mel Fisher Maritime Museum and laboratories where Atocha artifacts are conserved and two full days of diving the site with salvage experts seeking the galleon’s sterncastle.

Any participant who discovers gold, silver or artifacts will be awarded previously conserved Atocha pieces of equal value, up to $2,500, from the Fisher family’s private collection.

The package also includes six nights’ accommodations in Key West, training and checkout dives on the Keys’ living coral reef and an optional lobster dive or exploration of the artificial reef Gen. Hoyt S. Vandenberg. A welcome barbecue and pool party with the Fisher family and a sunset sailing excursion round out the experience.

Cost is $2,500 per person and space is extremely limited since each session is restricted to six divers. For available dates and reservations, contact Shawn Cowles or Jordan Filbrandt at 305-294-5441.
