Revelers can unleash hidden heroics or devious alter egos Friday, Oct. 18, through Sunday, Oct. 27, during Key West’s annual Fantasy Fest celebration. Themed “Super Heroes, Villains… & Beyond,” the 2013 festival features 10 days of masquerade balls, costume contests, parties and uninhibited escapades, all climaxing in an epic grand parade set for Saturday, Oct. 26.
To book a room at Parrot Key Resort, dial (877) 684-5095.
Event organizers encourage 2013 participants to design floats and costumes around the festival theme.
They might take inspiration from caped crusaders or cartoon foes, mythic gods and monsters, “good guys” from the silver screen or denizens of the dark side.
In addition, Key West’s Caribbean roots are to be celebrated with Friday and Saturday’s Goombay street party in historic Bahama Village.
Throughout the festival, themed costume competitions are planned to draw competitors ranging from single super-humans to dynamic duos and groups. The schedule also includes a pirate bash, a rock-and-roll burlesque musical, a “Halos & Horns” soiree and parties for the valiant and villainous alike.
The spotlight shines on Key West’s renowned Duval Street Friday as vendors of costumes, arts and crafts, food and libations star in the mile-long Fantasy Fest Street Fair. In addition, the Masquerade March draws masked and costumed evildoers and action heroes for an exuberant walking parade.
The clash between superheroes and scoundrels is to culminate Saturday, Oct. 26, during the Captain Morgan Fantasy Fest Parade through Key West’s historic “Gotham City” downtown. Tens of thousands of spectators converge to cheer the parade’s exotic marching groups, Caribbean bands, costumed characters and lavishly decorated motorized floats.

Salute sweet Key Lime pie and the tiny fruit that inspired it with events ranging from a pie-eating contest to a wacky world record attempt at the inaugural Key Lime Festival set for July 4-6.
About the Key Lime Festival
The festival was conceived by Key West author and baker David Sloan, who penned “The Ultimate Key Lime Pie Cookbook.” It celebrates the popularity of the tart, creamy dessert so closely identified with the Florida Keys that almost every visitor samples it.
Believed to have originated in Key West in the late 1800s, Key lime pie was designated Florida’s official pie in 2006 by the state legislature. Its primary ingredients are condensed milk, egg yolks and the juice of the tiny yellow Key lime, with the creamy filling typically nestled in a graham cracker crust and topped with whipped cream or meringue.
Festival Highlights and Activities
Festival highlights are to include an attempt by Sloan and three fellow chefs to set a Guinness World Record for baking the largest Key lime pie in history. They plan to debut their creation, expected to exceed 15 feet in diameter, during the Key Lime Piestravaganza Thursday, July 4, on Greene Street just off Duval Street.
The Piestravaganza is to feature other attractions including the Mile-High Key Lime Pie Eating Contest at noon and an appearance by the festival’s offbeat mascot, Key Lime Kirby.
Sloan and company are to unveil “the world’s largest Key lime pie” at 2 p.m., subsequently serving slices of their gigantic creation to attendees who donate $1 to the historic Key West Firehouse Museum.
Key Lime Pie Championships
Aspiring bakers can prove their pie-making prowess at noon Friday, July 5, during the Key Lime Pie Championships at the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, 907 Whitehead St.
Entrants can vie for blue ribbons in multiple divisions, with pies judged on criteria including appearance, flavor balance and originality. Spectators can purchase tickets to sample, savor and cast People’s Choice votes.
Miss Key Lime U.S.A. Pageant
Other festival events include the Miss Key Lime U.S.A. Pageant, paired with comedy and performances, and the Lil’ Miss Key Lime pageant for costumed kids ages 6-10.
